After abdominal surgery, one-third of patients will get an incisional hernia. An incisional hernia happens at or near a surgical incision through which an organ, piece of tissue, or intestine protrudes. Due to a surgical incision, the abdominal muscle weakens, leading to incisional hernias. A person is more likely to develop an incisional hernia if they engage in excessive or premature physical activity after surgery, put on a lot of weight, get pregnant, or increase their abdominal pressure in any other way before the incision has completely healed. Although they can arise at any moment, incisional hernias are most likely to develop three to six months after surgery.
